The City Museum of Novi Sad

City Museum of Novi Sad is a museum of complex type dedicated to collecting, preservation, presentation and interpretation of multilayer and multinational cultural heritage of the area of Novi Sad and the areas that gravitate to it.

Respecting the principles modern museological practice and following modern scientific tendencies, experts of the City Museum of Novi Sad have been creating safe conditions for protection of cultural artefacts, whose presentation, as a kind of media, enable an objective interpretation of the facts.

In accordance with its social responsibility the City Museum of Novi Sad creates and realizes its programs with the intention to allow widest audience to perceive the segments of the cultural and historical heritage and to create individual knowledge about it.
 
Following this approach, the City Museum of Novi Sad becomes the meeting point of different ideas, a place of intercultural dialogue and the most diverse cultural experiences.
 
For more than 50 years of existence the City Museum of Novi Sad has collected and conserved over 60 thousand items that represent material evidences of the life of its earliest inhabitants, the turbulent historical events, the economic and social development of the city, the culture of habitation, the aesthetic principles and artistic expressions of the population of Novi Sad .

Part of the items from the rich museum collection is presented to public within  permanent exibitions in the main building and annexes, as well as through the organization of thematic exhibitions. Besides exhibition activities, the Museum organizes other types of events, such as festival of documentary and scientific films, book promotions, creative workshops for the youngest citizens, etc., with the aim of enriching the cultural offer of the City of Novi Sad.

In the mid19th century, with the growing popularity of the style second rococo, large and luxurious mirrors re-enter the fashion. Like century ago, carved frames are richly gilded, thus these items have become very luxurious interior details. Such mirrors were affordable only to the wealthy families and decorated their showrooms and lobbies.

A glass

Description: 
Multicolor decorated and gilded glass with Serbian coat was made in the second half of the 19th century in one of the Serbian glass factory. Floral decoration in red color is typical of the late Biedermeier period. In civil salons of that time sometimes the entire showcases were filled with these decorative souvenirs as a sign that the owner could not afford expensive trip to trendy and spa places.

Description: 
In the porcelain collection at the Museum of Novi Sad, couple of vasesparticulary stand out, masterpieces of Viennese porcelain manufactory in 1805, of which just one is exposed. Made in the spirit of classicism, masterfully painted and richly gilded, the vases were derived from three parts: a round pedestal, the body with maskeron shaped handles and cover. Parties painted on vases are particularly interesting because, in accordance with the usual visual themes of the time, showing love mythological themes.

The Wall clock

The Wall clock in the glassed-in box is typical for Central Europe in the first half of 19th century. Discreet decorative details are similar to what could be found on furniture from that period while the use of gilding was common in the shaping of applied art objects. This well-preserved clock comes from the house once a very rich and important family of Novi Sad Latinčić.

Rack of simple cubic form is an example of luxurious civil furniture from the mid-19th century. Solid and expensive handmade implies the use of finely polished veneer that give mobiliar a high gloss. An interesting detail on this piece are the drawers, one of which was used as a small writing desk.

Picture with the image of of Maria Milashinovic is a typical example of Biedermeier portraits in our community, and its author, Nikola Aleksic, is one of the most important representatives of the Serbian portrait painting in the 19th century. As in his other works, the artist set the character in a sitting position, with the presence of dark and neutral background, and presented all details of the face and clothes with darker palette of tones.

Icon of St.. John the Forerunner with the hagiography

Description: 
Icon with the image of St. John the Forerunner was painted in 1737. by iconographer George Stojanovic, whose signature is looming in the record preserved in fragments in the lower part. With a standing figure of the saint, the icon shows two scenes from the plays of Birth of St. John the Forerunner in the left corner and St. Archangel Michael on the right. The icon originates from iconostasis of the Church of the Nativity of St.. John in Belgrade and it was brought to Novi Sad by the refugees during the migration period in 1739.

Painting of impressive dimensions and expressionist tune is the work of Milan Cirlic, representative of post-war generation of artists from Novi Sad. The author presents one of the most impressive buildings of Novi Sad, former Magistrate, today called Town Hall. The painting was created in 1959 presents an interesting detail which no longer exist - the tram which passes through the center of town.

Portrait of Marija Vuchetic

The portrayal of the portrait of Marija Vučetić, wife of Novi Sad lawyer Ilija Vučetić and a woman who was very active in the social life of Novi Sad in the late 19th and early 20th century. The author of the portrait is a famous Serbian painter Marko Murat, who resided in Novi Sad in the summer of 1897, working on paintings by order. The work is exceptional for its artistic qualities, because it is one of the first modern paintings in the local environment, with visible effects of plein air painting and Impressionism.
